Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal Withdraws From World Cup

Saeed Ajmal Pakistan actionKarachi: Ace Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal announced he will not feature in next year's World Cup after he failed to completely correct his bowling action which led to his suspension three months ago, an official said Saturday.
The 37-year-old Ajmal appeared before a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) committee on Saturday before taking the decision.
"Ajmal has taken this decision all by himself as he has not been able to completely correct his action and he will hold a press conference in a couple of days to announce his decision," PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan told media.
Ajmal's bowling action was reported during the Galle Test in Sri Lanka in August. His action was found illegal on a bio-mechanic assessment a month later which led to his suspension.
"The remedial work on his action will take some time so we are not sending him for an unofficial test," said Khan.
Under the International Cricket Council (ICC) rules all bowlers are allowed to bend their elbow by 15 degrees beyond which the action is deemed illegal.
The suspended bowlers need to remodel their action after which they undergo reassessment to get clearance.
Ajmal did remedial work under former Pakistan spinner Saqlain Mushtaq who also advised him to take some more time.
Mohammad Akram, head coach at Pakistan's national cricket academy, said Ajmal has taken an honest decision.
"Ajmal wants to play as world number one bowler and not someone who wants to hide for his action," Akram told AFP. "Saqlain advised him to concentrate on cricket after the World Cup which he has accepted and withdrew from the World Cup," said Akram.
Pakistan face another race against time on all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez whose action was also reported last month.
PCB has decided to send Hafeez to Chennai, India for unofficial tests before applying for reassessment with the ICC.
Ajmal's absence will badly hamper Pakistan's chances in the World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand in February-March next year.

The International Cricket Council on Monday announced Sachin Tendulkar as the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 ambassador. It will be the second successive time that the India maestro will be the Ambassador of ICC's pinnacle tournament, after he fulfilled the role in the previous event, which was co-hosted by Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka in 2011.
In his role as a World Cup 2015 ambassador, Tendulkar will promote and support a variety of ICC initiatives to enhance the profile of the tournament, which is the third biggest sporting event in the world and will take place in Australia and New Zealand from February 14 to March 29.
Tendulkar retired from international cricket last year after representing his country in 200 Tests, 463 One-Day Internationals and one Twenty20 International. In a career spanning 24 years, the 41-year-old scored a total of 34,357 international runs and 100 centuries.
Tendulkar added the missing World Cup title to his long list of achievements in his sixth attempt in 2011. He is the all-time leading run-getter in World Cup history with 2,278 runs in 45 matches at an average of 56.95. For his 673 runs in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003, he was awarded player of the tournament as India finished runner-up to Australia.
Commenting on his appointment, Tendulkar said: "I am delighted and honoured to be appointed ICC Cricket World Cup Ambassador for the second successive time.
"After playing in the last six editions, the upcoming World Cup will be a different experience as I will follow it from the sidelines. It could probably be comparable to the ICC Cricket World Cup 1987 where I was a ball boy, enthusiastically cheering every ball.
"The excitement of the World Cup grows with every new edition and this year's host nations, Australia and New Zealand, are known for their sporting culture, great cricket facilities and knowledgeable crowds. Lifting the World Cup is every international cricketer's quest and the tournament brings out the best of individuals and competing teams.
"The image of the champion team lifting the World Cup inspires many youngsters around the world and gives them a dream to chase - a dream which I fulfilled after 22 years of relentless pursuit by being part of the victorious Indian team in 2011."
ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said: "The ICC is delighted to once again have Sachin as an Ambassador for its biggest and most prestigious tournament. Sachin is not only an inspiration to cricketers but to all sportspeople for his endurance, perseverance, talent, personality and commitment to the game."
The 11th edition of the World Cup kicks off in Christchurch on February 14 when co-hosts New Zealand take on former champion Sri Lanka. On the same day at the picturesque Melbourne Cricket Ground, four-time world champion Australia will square-off against England, which reached the final the last time the event was staged in Australia/New Zealand in 1992.
A total of 49 matches will be played across 14 venues, seven in New Zealand (Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Napier, Nelson and Wellington) and seven in Australia (Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney).
The format of the tournament is the same as the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, i.e. two groups of seven sides each, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. All the knock-out stage matches will have reserve days.
Apart from the 10 Full Members, four qualifiers - Afghanistan, Ireland, Scotland and the United Arab Emirates - will take part in the tournament.

Suspended offspinner Saeed Ajmal's chances to feature for Pakistan in next year`s World Cup were further hit Saturday after authorities decided he needed more time to remodel his bowling action.

The 37-year-old was suspended from all international cricket after his bowling action was found illegal in a bio-mechanical test in September.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) earlier this month requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to have Ajmal`s action reassessed but had to delay that after his unofficial tests revealed he still needed remodelling.

Ajmal has been remodelling his action with the help of former Pakistan off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq.

Under the ICC rules all bowlers are allowed to flex their elbow by 15 degrees but Ajmal`s tests revealed his elbow flexed by 43 degree.

Besides Ajmal Pakistan also faces race against time to get all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez cleared after his action was reported as suspect last month.

He was subsequently suspended earlier this month.

A PCB meeting on Saturday decided Hafeez will proceed to Chennai, India to have an unofficial test while Ajmal will do more remodelling work in Lahore.

"The PCB committee discussed the future course of action to be adopted with regard to Ajmal and Hafeez and agreed that in the case of Ajmal, further remedial work should continue in collaboration with Saqlain and a bio mechanist in Lahore," a PCB release said.

The delay means Ajmal may not be included in the 15-man squad for the February-March World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand.

All 14 teams have to announce their final 15-man squad by January 7 next year.

"The group was informed that significant progress had been made by Ajmal who is now working on completing his `mileage` with the remodelled action which shall soon be accomplished," said PCB.

The PCB fully supports Ajmal in his attempt to regularize his action and to return to cricket as Pakistan`s top performer in the future, the release added.

"It was noted that Saqlain and Mushtaq Ahmed (Pakistan`s spin bowling coach) have both worked with Hafeez and his action should now be unofficially tested in Chennai next week," said the PCB.

If Hafeez clears the unofficial tests then the PCB will apply for his official reassessment with the ICC.

Eoin Morgan replaced Alastair Cook as England ODI captain.
England selectors today announced a 15-man squad for the tri-series against Australia and India next month and the ICC Cricket World Cup.

Selectors have made three changes to the one-day squad that lost 5-2 to Sri Lanka earlier this month. Led by Eoin Morgan, James Anderson and Stuart Broad return from injury with batsman Gary Ballance also included. Alastair Cook, Ben Stokes and Harry Gurney are the three players to miss out from the most recent one-day squad.

The squad will leave for Australia on 6 January for a tri-series against Australia and India ahead of the World Cup. England will open their World Cup campaign on 14 February against Australia in Melbourne.

National Selector, James Whitaker, said: “We have had to make some difficult decisions to get to our final squad but firmly believe that the 15 players selected offer the very best chance of success at the World Cup.

“I would like to congratulate all players on their selection and wish Peter, Eoin, and the squad all the very best. Representing England in a World Cup is a huge honour and responsibility, something all the players recognise. There have been a number of promising performances from players in recent series and it is important that this squad continues to develop their one-day skills quickly and players start to show the sort of consistency needed to succeed regularly on the world stage.”

I firmly believe that with the players currently involved in the one-day set up we have the makings of a very good one-day side, a young side that can surprise people at the World Cup. We all recognise we still have a lot of work to do on our one-day game but the potential of this group of players is huge and it is now up to us as players to turn that potential into consistent performances on the international stage starting next month against Australia and India.”
